Postcards from Penguin: One Hundred Book Covers in One Box
Author: none
ISBN-10: 0141044667
ISBN-13: 9780141044668
Published: 2010-09-15
Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics)

Book Description:
Product Description This is a collection of 100 postcards, each featuring a different and iconic Penguin book jacket. From classics to crime, here are over seventy years of quintessentially British design in one box. In 1935 Allen Lane stood on a platform at Exeter railway station, looking for a good book for the journey to London. His disappointment at the poor range of paperbacks on offer led him to found Penguin Books. The quality paperback had arrived. Declaring that 'good design is no more expensive than bad', Lane was adamant that his Penguin paperbacks should cost no more than a packet of cigarettes, but that they should always look distinctive. Ever since then, from their original - now world-famous - look featuring three bold horizontal stripes, through many different stylish, inventive and iconic cover designs, Penguin's paperback jackets have been a constantly evolving part of Britain's culture. And whether they're for classics, crime, reference or prize-winning novels, they still follow Allen Lane's original design mantra. Sometimes, you definitely should judge a book by its cover. Postcards from The New Yorker: One Hundred Covers from Ten Decades
Author:
ISBN-10: 1846144698
ISBN-13: 9781846144691
Published: 2012-05-23
Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics)

Book Description:
"The New Yorker" was launched in 1925, and offers reporting, criticism, essays, fiction, poetry, humour, and cartoons. From the very outset, the founders, Harold Ross and Jane Grant, declared that their sophisticated magazine was 'not edited for the old lady in Dubuque'. "The New Yorker" has also offered great literature in short stories from such acclaimed writers as John Cheever, Roald Dahl, Alice Munro, Haruki Murakami, Vladimir Nabokov, J.D. Salinger, and Shirley Jackson. From the very first issue, the now iconic monocled dandy Eustace Tilley made "The New Yorker's" covers unique and pointed. These signature traits have continued right up to the present day in the striking and sometimes controversial covers from such artists as Peter Arno, William Steig, Saul Steinberg, Jean-Jacques Sempe, and Art Spiegelman. These covers were selected by Francoise Mouly.

The Devil in Design: The Krampus Postcards
Author: Monte Beauchamp
ISBN-10: 1560975423
ISBN-13: 9781560975427
Published: 2004-05-31
Publisher: Fantagraphics Books

Book Description:
A collection of vintage Christmas cards for very bad little girls and boys. The Devil in Design is a fascinating, full-color compendium of extremely rare, late 19th and early 20th-century Krampus postcards culled from key postcard collections from around the world. Lavishly illustrated with over a 150 striking and stylized full-page examples, the book also includes a short introduction tracing the character's origin and its overwhelming popularity throughout Europe. In the Christmas traditions of Europe, the Krampus is Saint Nicholas's dark servant—a hairy, horned, supernatural beast whose pointed ears and long slithering tongue gave misbehavers the creeps! Whereas Saint Nicholas would reward children who had been good all year with treats, those that had been disobedient were paid a visit by the Krampus. The Krampus terrorized the bad until they promised to be good. Some he'd spank; others he'd whip, while others he'd shackle, stuff into his large wooden basket, and then hurl into the flames of Hell! Such scenarios were delineated by skilled and imaginative Old World craftsmen, printed on penny postcards and disseminated throughout Europe. The Devil in Design is the first English-language book to offer this breathtaking collection of the finest, rarest, and most visually-stunning Krampus cards history has left to offer. Postcards of the Wiener Werkstatte
Author: Detlef Hilmer
ISBN-10: 3775727515
ISBN-13: 9783775727518
Published: 2011-01-31
Publisher: Hatje Cantz

Book Description:
Founded in 1903 by architect Josef Hoffmann and designer Koloman Moser, the Wiener Werkstatte, or Vienna Workshops, gathered architects, artists and designers committed to making design excellence available to all. As a form, the postcard presented a perfect medium for the transmission of these ideals, and so it was that in 1907 the Werkstatte began publishing a series of numbered postcards commemorating holidays, depicting new fashions and documenting the sights of Vienna. All of the major designers who worked for the Wiener Werkstatte--including Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Dagobert Peche, Moriz Jung, Rudolf Kalvach, Mela Koehler and Maria Likarz--contributed to this project, and consequently these postcards constitute an important genre within Wiener Werkstatte production. This fully illustrated volume, published for the Neue Galerie's Fall 2010 exhibition of Wiener Werkstatte postcards (drawn from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection), is the first catalogue raisonne in English devoted to this fascinating, hitherto little-known genre.

Down the Ocean: Postcards from Maryland and Delaware Beaches
Author: Professor Bert Smith
ISBN-10: 0801861918
ISBN-13: 9780801861918
Published: 1999-03-15
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press

Book Description:
In this companion to his book Greetings from Baltimore, Bert Smith takes us on a tour of summers past in Ocean City, Maryland, and the nearby Delaware beaches, where vacationers have been going for more than a century to find sun, surf, and souvenirs. Down the Ocean offers a wonderful selection of charming postcard scenes of the early days of these resort towns, when visitors held tight to safety lines and bravely entered the water dressed in heavy woolen bathing suits. It also takes us through the decades that followed, when automobiles and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge made jaunts to the ocean more convenient and brought changes that transformed the mid-Atlantic coast.Accompanied by Bert Smith's engaging account of local history and lore, the images assembled here document not just the appearance of beach towns but also the feel of beach life from years gone by. Some postcards from the first half of the twentieth century were individually hand colored, and many display photographic tricks, illustrated embellishments, humorous cartoons, or unique design elements -- making them far more evocative than mere snapshots. These postcards capture views of Ocean City's grand hotels of the past, such as the Atlantic, the Plimhimmon, the Stephen Decatur, and the Commander, as well as smaller cottages, motels, and boardwalk businesses. Many of these structures have been destroyed by fires, storms, or the ravages of time; others have been altered beyond recognition or replaced by condominiums. Whether you seek saltwater taffy, a carousel ride, a moonlight stroll on the boardwalk, or a quiet view of a historic lighthouse, you'll find it all, then as now, "down the ocean.""Some of the happiest postcards are those saved or sent from our summer vacations at the ocean. With bright or faded images of the beach and sun and short messages like 'the weather's hot,' 'the water's cold,' and 'the fish are biting,' these colorful souvenirs can instantly take us back to warm breezes, hot sand between our toes, and the smell of french fries and fresh saltwater taffy... You can almost hear the ragtime pianos of the pre-World War I years as you turn over a softly colored card of the old Atlantic Hotel and read the greeting put down in an elegant, flourishing hand, in real ink that flowed from a fountain pen in 1910, or imagine crowds jitterbugging to the joyful jive and swing of the big bands in the 1940s when you see a glowing technicolor linen-textured card of Rehoboth Avenue, with its wartime message hurriedly scribbled in pencil." -- from the Introduction
