Practicing the Presence of Peace Author: Bear Jack Gebhardt ISBN-10: 0977623262 ISBN-13: 9780977623266 Published: 2009-04-22 Publisher: Seven Traditions Press

Book Description:
A 300 Year Old Spiritual Classic Gives Birth to a Contemporary Masterpiece! Can we experience the presence of peace every day, all day, while washing the dishes, feeding the cat, or riding the bus on the way to work? Can we experience this presence when the kids are fighting, the boss is frustrated and the stock market is in tatters? This book says absolutely yes, and shows us how! In the late 1600's a small book appeared, The Practice of the Presence of God, describing the daily spiritual practices of a humble monk named Brother Lawrence. That book, never out of print, evolved into a beloved classic and textbook for "contemplative spirituality." Now Practicing the Presence of Peace updates that beloved classic and shows how the simple practice of peace inevitably leads to • Better health and physical healing • Happier family relationships • Profitable vocational advancement • The end of the agonizing search for "more." "This is marvelous! So simple. So true. You've done a wonderful service for us all." -Maury Albertson, Ph.D., co-founder, Peace Corps "Just reading this book led me to spontaneous experiences of deep peace." -Father August Mote (Church of England) "...a seamless blend of the most practical spiritual techniques from both East and West, this book shows how we can work toward world peace in our daily lives-by bringing peace to our own neighborhood!" -Rensai Sujata (Buddhist) "Thank you, Bear. This book is a ball of light!" -Rabbi Larry Deschowitz Bear Gebhardt is senior librarian at Heart Mountain Monastery.

Utopia: Thomas More Author: Thomas More ISBN-10: 1450533000 ISBN-13: 9781450533003 Published: 2010-01-14 Publisher: CreateSpace
|
Book Description:
Although there are other "Utopia" books written before Thomas More's, it is this book that made its title into a by-word in the English (and other) languages. "Utopia" was More's response to Plato's "Republic," in that it is a framework for a perfect society according to More's ideas of the time. Originally published in Latin, the first English version appeared in 1551, some 16 years after More's death. More's "Utopia," which is a brief book (100 pages), portrays a communal, democratic society. It is paradoxically unregulated and tightly regulated. More's citizens just want to do what is best for their society, and that covers a remarkably narrow range of possibilities. There are, of course, some who break the laws of the land, and More deals with them harshly. "Harsh" is a relative term, though, and his punishments were hardly harsh in a day when it was a hanging offense to steal a loaf of bread for your starving family. More's "Utopia" is also a strongly religious society. Religious tolerance is a matter of law, a novelty by the standards of More's day and the standard of his own behavior. 'Tolerance', however, meant tolerance of any monotheism that wasn't too animistic, and certainly didn't tolerate the unreligious. Thomas More's own life was less than a Utopia. He was executed by Henry VIII (one of his best friends) for, among other trespasses, refusing to uphold the king's divorce from Catherine of Arragon. Before that time More served Henry VIII in many capacities, including Speaker of the House of Commons, Master of Requests, Privy Councillor, and Lord Chancellor. More's strong integrity and resolute mind caught the attention of scholars, political and church leaders internationally; it was this same integrity that most likely was his undoing, refusing to assent to the King's divorce and severance of ties binding the English Church with the Roman overlordship of the Pope.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment Author: Eckhart Tolle ISBN-10: 0783891954 ISBN-13: 9780783891958 Published: 2000-12 Publisher: G. K. Hall & Company
|
Book Description:
It's no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, ""the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death."" Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

As a Man Thinketh Author: James Allen ISBN-10: 1612930220 ISBN-13: 9781612930220 Published: 2012-01-08 Publisher: Tribeca Books
|
Book Description:
James Allens classic AS A MAN THINKETH. The Bestselling Classic That Inspired "The Secret". AS A MAN THINKETH, Allen's most famous book, today is considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person. In "As a Man Thinketh," James Allen reveals how our thoughts determine reality. Whether or not we are conscious of it, our underlying beliefs shape our character, our health and appearance, our circumstances, and our destinies. Allen shows how we can master our thoughts to create the life we want, lest we drift through life unconscious of the inner forces that keep us mired in failure and frustration. "The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart-this you will build your life by, this you will become." This principle, which others have called THE SECRET or the LAW OF ATTRACTION, was clearly and convincingly stated for the first time in "As a Man Thinketh." As a being of Power, Intelligence, and Love, and the lord of his own thoughts, man holds the key to every situation, and contains within himself that transforming and regenerative agency by which he may make himself what he wills.

Originally published in 1937, and selling more than 60 million copies worldwide, Hill's Think and Grow Rich is the classic motivational book. Inspired by Andrew Carnegie, Hill studied the work and lives of some of the most successful people of the Industrial Era including Ford, Wrigley, Eastman, Rockefeller, Edison, Woolworth, Burbank, Morgan, and Firestone as well as three United States Presidents. From his 20 plus years of research into the characteristics of what launched these individuals into greatness and wealth, Hill developed his 13 universal principles, meant to inspire any individual to a richer, fuller life. The true genius of his writing is the simple way in which he explains that wealth comes from seeing your goal in your mind and making it happen, no matter what.
