Treasures from the Attic: The Extraordinary Story of Anne Frank's Family Author: Mirjam Pressler ISBN-10: 038553339X ISBN-13: 9780385533393 Published: 2011-04-19 Publisher: Doubleday

Book Description:
The story is one that is envisioned by many: a relative, an old woman who has lived in the same home for a lifetime, passes away, her death prompting the inevitable task of sorting through her effects by her surviving family. But in the attic in this particular house, a treasure trove of historic importance is found. Rarely does this become an actuality, but when Helene Elias died, no one could put a price on what she left behind. Helene Elias was born Helene Frank, sister to Otto Frank, and therefore aunt to Anne Frank. Ensconced upstairs in the house she inherited from her mother, and eventually passed on to her son, Buddy Elias, Anne’s cousin and childhood playmate, was the documented legacy of the Frank family: a vast collection of photos, letters, drawings, poems, and postcards preserved throughout decades—a cache of over 6,000 documents in all. Chronicled by Buddy’s wife, Gertrude, and renowned German author Mirjam Pressler, these findings weave an indelible, engaging, and endearing portrait of the family that shaped Anne Frank. They wrote to one another voluminously; recounted summer holidays, and wrote about love and hardships. They reassured one another during the terrible years and waited anxiously for news after the war had ended. Through these letters, they rejoiced in new life, and honored the memories of those they lost. Anne’s family believed themselves to ordinary members of Germany’s bourgeoisie. That they were wrong is part of history, and we celebrate them here with this extraordinary account. Insert Authors’ photo: © Jürgen BauerMirjam Pressler is one of Germany’s most beloved authors. She was the German translator of Anne Frank’s diary.

Deliver Us From Darkness: The Untold Story of Third Battalion 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment During Market Garden (General Military) Author: Ian Gardner ISBN-10: 1849087172 ISBN-13: 9781849087179 Published: 2012-04-17 Publisher: Osprey Publishing
|
Book Description:
Ian Gardner, co-author of Tonight We Die as Men, is back with the second installment of the exploits of the 3/506 in WWII. Drawing on years of research and more than seventy extended interviews with veterans and civilians caught up in the fighting, Deliver Us from Darkness begins where the earlier book ended, with the troops taking R&R back in England after weeks of grueling fighting in Normandy. Deliver Us from Darkness explains how, with little notice on Sept 17, 1944, the 101st Airborne Division parachuted into Holland as part of Operation Market Garden. Their mission was to secure the main highway that passed through the city of Eindhoven and facilitate the advance of Gen. Sir Miles Dempsey's Second British Army towards Arnhem. The soldiers had been lead to believe that after the capture of Eindhoven their mission would be over. In the end, however, it was only the beginning of a bloody 72-day campaign that would see no quarter given by either side. Thousands of heavily armed enemy troops trapped behind Allied lines were reorganized into temporary fighting groups and sent on the offensive. Supported by Tiger tanks and self propelled artillery, the German army began an audacious series of counter attacks along the road to Nijmegen that became known as ‘Hell’s Highway.’ Over the next two weeks the 506th was constantly called upon to defend the transport hubs north of Eindhoven at Sint Oedenrode, Veghel and Uden suffering horrendous casualties. The mission in Holland would be one that the men would never forget. Many felt that their lives had been misused and wasted—Normandy had been bad enough, but this time the members of 3/506 had been through hell.

The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh Author: Vincent Van Gogh ISBN-10: 0713991356 ISBN-13: 9780713991352 Published: 1996-09-01 Publisher: Viking Adult
|
Book Description:
The painter, Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) was also an accomplished writer, and this collection of his letters provides both a self-portrait and a picture of the contemporary cultural scene. The book includes complete letters wherever possible, linked with passages of connecting narrative and showing all the pen-and-ink sketches that originally went with them. The familiar image of Van Gogh as an anti-social madman is questionned in this book as the letters show the humanitarian and religious causes he embraced, his fascination with the French revolution, his striving for God and for ethical ideals, his desperate courtship of his cousin and his unsuccessful search for love. Not only does this serve to demolish some of the myths about Van Gogh but it shows him as a human being, not just an artist. The letters also reveal Van Gogh's conflicts as a painter, torn between realism, symbolism and abstraction. He received little feedback from the public and wrote at length to his family and friends and above all, to his brother Theo, who was his confidant.
