Book Description:
Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption. This vivid translation by David McDuff has been acclaimed as the most accessible version of Dostoyevsky’s great novel, rendering its dialogue with a unique force and naturalism. This edition also includes a new chronology of Dostoyevsky’s life and work. @RobPeterPayPaul It’s hard being a poor student – lots of work, crappy room, and I have the ugliest hat this side of the Urals. It is a bit of a rut being so miserably impoverished. I need something to lighten up my life, something exciting… I’ve got it. Rather than accept financial aid from my friend, I’ll murder an elderly money-lender in cold blood. Why? I’m not telling. However, if you’d like to guess at my psychological and ideological motivations for the next couple of hundred years, be my guest. Book Description:
At nineteen Anne Elliot refuses an offer of marriage from Frederick Wentworth, persuaded to do so by Lady Russell, a friend of her dead mother. Wentworth is a sailor, with no money and an uncertain future, says Lady Russell - just a nobody, certainly not worthy of a baronet's daughter. Eight years later Wentworth returns, a rich and successful captain, looking for a wife. Anne is still unmarried, but Captain Wentworth clearly prefers the company of the two Musgrove girls...Jane Austen's tale of love and marriage is told with humour and a sharp understanding of human behaviour.

Small Furry Hope: Dog Rescue and the Meaning of Life Author: Steven Kotler ISBN-10: 1408810956 ISBN-13: 9781408810958 Published: 2011-11-01 Publisher: Bloomsbury UK
|
Book Description:
Steven Kotler was forty years old, single, and facing an existential crisis when he met Lila, a woman devoted to animal rescue. "Love me, love my dogs," was her rule, and Steven took it to heart. Spurred to move by a housing crisis in Los Angeles, Steven, Lila - and their eight dogs, then ten, then twenty, and then they lost count - bought a postage-stamp-sized farm in Chimayo, New Mexico. A Small Furry Hope chronicles their adventures at Rancho de Chihuahua, the sanctuary they created for their pack with special needs: the very old, the very sick, and, as Kotler says, "the really retarded." An insider look at the culture of dog rescue, A Small Furry Prayer weaves personal experience, and scientific inquiry into a fast-paced, fun-filled narrative that explores what it means to devote one's life to the furry and the four-legged. Along the way, Kotler combs through every aspect of canine-human relations, from long human history with dogs to brand new research into the neuroscience of canine companionship, in the end discovering why living in a world made of dog may be the best way to uncover the truth about what it really means to be human.

Northanger Abbey (English Library) Author: Jane Austen ISBN-10: 0140430741 ISBN-13: 9780140430745 Published: 1972-08-30 Publisher: Penguin Classics
|
Book Description:
Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775. She was an English novelist who wrote numerous works of romantic fiction. Ms. Austen has millions of adoring fans all around the world and she is one of the most beloved writers in all of English literature. Many people may be surprised to learn that Jane Austen only published six novels. However, these works have become the foundation for the true romantic novel ever since they found their way to the world early in the 19th century. An early version of this book was written under the title “Susan”. It was actually the first of Jane Austen's novels sold to a publisher who then advertised it as forthcoming, but never issued it. Jane Austen had the manuscript brought back more than ten years later, after several of her other novels had been published. She apparently made some revisions, but finally "put it on the shelf.” It was only after her death in 1817 that her brother Henry finally had it published (together with Persuasion). The title "Northanger Abbey" was not chosen by Jane Austen (she referred to the book in her letter as "Miss Catherine".
