Pets at Risk: From Allergies to Cancer, Remedies for an Unsuspected Epidemic
Author: D.V.M. Alfred J. Plechner
ISBN-10: 0939165481
ISBN-13: 9780939165483
Published: 2003-09-16
Publisher: NewSage Press

Book Description:
Veterinarians are seeing an explosion of health problems in cats, dogs, and horses — chronic diseases, immunological illnesses, cancer, and more. Conditions thought to affect only one breed are showing up in others. This illustrated book explores the causes and treatments. During the past 30 years of clinical work, renowned veterinarian Dr. Alfred Plechner has identified a widespread but unrecognized deficiency in the endocrine-immune system of these animals that is wreaking havoc on the pet population. Pets at Risk is his proven program of intervention and care. The book is designed to be used jointly by pet owners and vets, since part of the treatment involves pharmaceuticals along with a healthy diet and careful attention to food allergies. Positive results from Dr. Plechner’s practice and that of other vets show how these illnesses can be minimized or even eradicated. This guide truly offers a breakthrough method for keeping your pets healthy and safe from risk.

Veterinary Clinical Epidemiology, Third Edition
Author: Ronald D. Smith
ISBN-10: 0849315662
ISBN-13: 9780849315664
Published: 2005-09-07
Publisher: CRC Press

Book Description:
While veterinary medicine has always valued the concepts and methods of epidemiology, they are virtually inseparable in today’s clinical practice. With access to an ever-expanding number of journals, as well as countless Internet sources, more and more veterinarians are practicing evidence-based medicine. This is defined as the process of systematically finding, appraising, and adopting research findings as the primary basis for clinical decisions. “An underlying premise of the book is that patient-based research is epidemiologic research….It logically follows that the users of this information, veterinary students and practitioners, be skilled in its application to patient care.” – from the preface   Veterinary Clinical Epidemiology, Third Edition focuses on developing a deeper understanding of epidemiology and exemplifies how an improved capacity for interpreting and critiquing available  literature ultimately leads to improved patient care. In preparing this edition, Ronald Smith, a highly respected epidemiologist, practitioner, and educator, has entirely updated his earlier work to reflect those changes that have dramatically altered the practice of veterinary medicine over the last ten years. New to the third edition: ·   Numerous updated examples of the application of epidemiology in clinical practice ·   Expanded journal representation to include a larger selection of international research ·   Increased coverage of hypothesis testing, survey design, sampling and epidemiologic conceptsrelated to the practice of evidence-based medicine ·   Revised and updated information on diagnostic testing, risk assessment, causality, and the use of statistics Veterinary Clinical Epidemiology, Third Edition  provides practitioners and researchers with the knowledge and tools to understand, critically assess, and make use of the medical literature that is vital to the treatment of animal patients.

Healing the Herds: Disease, Livestock Economies, and the Globalization of Veterinary Medicine (Ecology & History)
Author:
ISBN-10: 0821418858
ISBN-13: 9780821418857
Published: 2010-03-09
Publisher: Ohio University Press

Book Description:
Healing the Herds: Disease, Livestock Economies, and the Globalization of Veterinary Medicineoffers a new and excitingcomparative approach to the complex interrelationships of microbes, markets, and medicine in the global economy. It draws upon fourteen case studies from the Americas, western Europe, and the European and Japanese colonies to illustrate how the rapid growth of the international trade in animals through the nineteenth century engendered the spread of infectious diseases, sometimes with devastating consequences for indigenous pastoral societies. At different times and across much of the globe, livestock epidemics have challenged social order and provoked state interventions, which were sometimes opposed by pastoralists. The intensification of agriculture has transformed environments, with consequences for animal and human health. But the last two centuries have also witnessed major changes in the way societies have conceptualized diseases and sought to control them. The rise of germ theories and the discovery of vaccines against some infections made it possible to move beyond the blunt tools of animal culls and restrictive quarantines of the past. Nevertheless, these older methods have remained important to strategies of control and prevention, as demonstrated during the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Britain in 2001.From the late nineteenth century, advances in veterinary technologies afforded veterinary scientists a new professional status and allowed them to wield greater political influence. In the European and Japanese colonies, state support for biomedical veterinary science often led to coercive policies for managing the livestock economies of the colonized peoples. In western Europe and North America, public responses to veterinary interventions were often unenthusiastic and reflected a latent distrust of outside interference and state regulation. Politics, economics, and science inform these essays on the history of animal diseases and the expansion in veterinary medicine.
