Birds of the Horn of Africa (Helm Field Guides) Author: Nigel Redman ISBN-10: 0713665416 ISBN-13: 9780713665413 Published: 2009-04-18 Publisher: Christopher Helm Publishers Ltd
|
Book Description:
The Horn of Africa has the highest endemism of any region in Africa, and around 70 species are found nowhere else in the world. Many of these are confined to the isolated highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea, but a large number of larks specialise in the arid parts of Somalia and adjoining eastern Ethiopia, whilst the island of Socotra has its own suite of endemic species. The region is also an important migration route and wintering site for many Palearctic birds. This is the first field guide to the birds of this fascinating region, and a companion to Birds of East Africa by two of the same authors. Over 200 magnificent plates by John Gale and Brian Small illustrate every species that has ever occurred in the five countries covered by the guide, and the succinct text covers the key identification criteria. Special attention is paid to the voices of the species, and over 1000 up-to-date colour distribution maps are included. This long-awaited guide is a much-needed addition to the literature on African birds and an essential companion for birders visiting the region.

Naval Strategy East of Suez: The Role of Djibouti Author: Charles W. Koburger ISBN-10: 0275941167 ISBN-13: 9780275941161 Published: 1992-03-30 Publisher: Praeger Publishers
|
Book Description:
This is the only current book on maritime Djibouti, and the only one available in English since 1968. It describes the geography, naval history, and present strategic role of this small country, and indicates its possible future. Naval Strategy East of Suez includes previously little-known facts of French covert action in Italian East Africa, 1938-1941; and of Operation Toreador (1956), which served to aid Operation Musketeer. It also turns a spotlight on the Allied blockade of Djibouti in 1940-1942. In a sense, this book is a more readable, and less technical, treatment of what sailors call "sailing directions." Djibouti's naval base, 600 miles closer to the Strait of Hormuz than Diego Garcia, is the nearest base to Middle East oil centers likely to be available to France and its allies in the future--facts often ignored or unknown to all but the most specialized of specialists. Koburger believes that the troubles in the Middle East are only beginning. His book offers a background and strategy about an area little known to Anglophones that is of considerable potential usefulness.

|
Book Description:
This volume examines the exploitation of the faunal diversity during the Holocene in the Horn of Africa, especially in the arid plain of Gobaad in Djibouti and in the mountainous region of Wolayta in Ethiopia. For that purpose, the author has studied faunal collections (more than 70 000 remains and 34 species) from five archaeological sites occupied from the 5th millennium BC to the 1st millennium AD. Both these regions offer very different natural environments, in which the presence of specialized societies of hunter-gatherers is evident. By integrating the findings of this research with data from the neighbouring countries, and by comparing them with all archaeological data, it appears that the diffusion of farming came from acculturation more than migration.
