Man's Search for Meaning
Author: Viktor E. Frankl
ISBN-10: 0807014273
ISBN-13: 9780807014271
Published: 2006-06-15
Publisher: Beacon Press

Book Description:
Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory—known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")—holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful. At the time of Frankl's death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey by the Library of Congress and the Book-of-the-Month Club that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found Man's Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America. Born in Vienna in 1905 Viktor E. Frankl earned an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna. He published more than thirty books on theoretical and clinical psychology and served as a visiting professor and lecturer at Harvard, Stanford, and elsewhere. In 1977 a fellow survivor, Joseph Fabry, founded the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy. Frankl died in 1997. Harold S. Kushner is rabbi emeritus at Temple Israel in Natick, Massachusetts, and the author of several best-selling books, including When Bad Things Happen to Good People.William J. Winslade is a philosopher, lawyer, and psychoanalyst at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston.

Published: 2011-09-04
Publisher: Partnerships For Community, Inc.

Book Description:
Review This is a beautiful book in design and content. The truths are spoken so well. It is a pleasure to see unspoken truths put into such good words. The book will be my companion to Overeaters Anonymous "For Today." It is profound. It is joyous. It speaks of the trials and the hardwon recovering. The glow is here. Thank you for your service and hard work to put together these splendid meditations. --Maggie (Boca Raton, FL) Product Description Letting Go of Compulsive Eating is an inspirational reader used by members of Overeaters Anonymous and others with eating disorders, substance abuse problems, or behavior addictions. Anonymous individuals who practice Twelve Step Recovery decided to produce this daily reader to more fully reflect our experience with dieting and recovery from compulsive eating. Such collective wisdom helps us to view each day as an opportunity for happiness by focusing on the reality of today without the burdens of compulsive eating. We are on a brighter firmer path. Our experience with dieting is what we first tried to solve life problems and compulsive eating. It is where we first hit bottom. Often it made us sick and impaired our thinking. We came into Twelve Step Recovery. With quotes from Anne Lamott, Camryn Manheim, Bob Dylan, Joan Didion, Oprah Winfrey, Alice Walker, Aimee Liu, and other notables, past and present, used in concert with the meditations, this reader brings some of the pleasures and rewards about truth-telling and arriving at self-truth to the surface. Selections deal with our desperation and fear, misconceptions about life, and especially, how our ideas of love, the terrors of love, and romantic addiction have played into our dieting and the methods we have tried. We talk about what we have tried for control, invisibility, buying time, putting off or conquering life. We identify 'So Many Lies' about the remedies, behaviors and methods, and tell about putting our lives on the basis of truth. We tell what happened to make us stop using compulsive dieting and to come into Twelve Step Recovery. We share about "Self-Care" and "Building On Identity" - what we do to practice clear thinking, detach from erroneous messages, clear away selfdeception, develop kindness toward self and others, be safe, recognize and deal effectively with attack voices, deal with overwhelming emotions, know and practice courage, serve, and build identity based on our God-given talents, abilities and enthusiasms. We talk about love, honor, loving self, loving another, loving the world.

Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength
Author: Roy F. Baumeister
ISBN-10: 1594203075
ISBN-13: 9781594203077
Published: 2011-09-01
Publisher: Penguin Press HC, The

Book Description:
One of the world's most esteemed and influential psychologists, Roy F. Baumeister, teams with New York Times science writer John Tierney to reveal the secrets of self-control and how to master it. In Willpower, the pioneering researcher Roy F. Baumeister collaborates with renowned New York Times science writer John Tierney to revolutionize our understanding of the most coveted human virtue: self-control.In what became one of the most cited papers in social science literature, Baumeister discovered that willpower actually operates like a muscle: it can be strengthened with practice and fatigued by overuse. Willpower is fueled by glucose, and it can be bolstered simply by replenishing the brain's store of fuel. That's why eating and sleeping- and especially failing to do either of those-have such dramatic effects on self-control (and why dieters have such a hard time resisting temptation).Baumeister's latest research shows that we typically spend four hours every day resisting temptation. No wonder people around the world rank a lack of self-control as their biggest weakness. Willpower looks to the lives of entrepreneurs, parents, entertainers, and artists-including David Blaine, Eric Clapton, and others-who have flourished by improving their self-control.The lessons from their stories and psychologists' experiments can help anyone. You learn not only how to build willpower but also how to conserve it for crucial moments by setting the right goals and using the best new techniques for monitoring your progress. Once you master these techniques and establish the right habits, willpower gets easier: you'll need less conscious mental energy to avoid temptation. That's neither magic nor empty self-help sloganeering, but rather a solid path to a better life.Combining the best of modern social science with practical wisdom, Baumeister and Tierney here share the definitive compendium of modern lessons in willpower. As our society has moved away from the virtues of thrift and self-denial, it often feels helpless because we face more temptations than ever. But we also have more knowledge and better tools for taking control of our lives. However we define happiness-a close- knit family, a satisfying career, financial security-we won't reach it without mastering self-control.

Yalom’s The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy has long been the standard text in its field. This edition features new sections on combining individual and group therapy, the latest information about brief group therapy, and how to modify group work to deal with the newly emerging homogeneous focal groups (including survivor groups), as well as updated references and new clinical vignettes drawn from the author’s recent practice.Throughout, Dr. Yalom has updated the style and content of the chapters, while retaining valid research and clinical observations. Illustrating the text are vivid cases from nearly two thousand group sessions that he has led over the past decade. The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy is an informative text that is at once scholarly and lively. Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think
Author: Brian Wansink
ISBN-10: 0553804340
ISBN-13: 9780553804348
Published: 2006-10-17
Publisher: Bantam

Book Description:
In this illuminating and groundbreaking new book, food psychologist Brian Wansink shows why you may not realize how much you’re eating, what you’re eating–or why you’re even eating at all.• Does food with a brand name really taste better?• Do you hate brussels sprouts because your mother did?• Does the size of your plate determine how hungry you feel?• How much would you eat if your soup bowl secretly refilled itself?• What does your favorite comfort food really say about you?• Why do you overeat so much at healthy restaurants?Brian Wansink is a Stanford Ph.D. and the director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab. He’s spent a lifetime studying what we don’t notice: the hidden cues that determine how much and why people eat. Using ingenious, fun, and sometimes downright fiendishly clever experiments like the “bottomless soup bowl,” Wansink takes us on a fascinating tour of the secret dynamics behind our dietary habits. How does packaging influence how much we eat? Which movies make us eat faster? How does music or the color of the room influence how much we eat? How can we recognize the “hidden persuaders” used by restaurants and supermarkets to get us to mindlessly eat? What are the real reasons most diets are doomed to fail? And how can we use the “mindless margin” to lose–instead of gain–ten to twenty pounds in the coming year? Mindless Eating will change the way you look at food, and it will give you the facts you need to easily make smarter, healthier, more mindful and enjoyable choices at the dinner table, in the supermarket, in restaurants, at the office–even at a vending machine–wherever you decide to satisfy your appetite.
