The Bluebird Effect: Uncommon Bonds with Common Birds Author: Julie Zickefoose ISBN-10: 0547003099 ISBN-13: 9780547003092 Published: 2012-03-20 Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
|
Book Description:
Julie Zickefoose lives for the moment when a wild, free living bird that she has raised or rehabilitated comes back to visit her; their eyes meet and they share a spark of understanding. Her reward for the grueling work of rescuing birds—such as feeding baby hummingbirds every twenty minutes all day long—is her empathy with them and the satisfaction of knowing the world is a birdier and more beautiful place. The Bluebird Effect is about the change that's set in motion by one single act, such as saving an injured bluebird—or a hummingbird, swift, or phoebe. Each of the twenty five chapters covers a different species, and many depict an individual bird, each with its own personality, habits, and quirks. And each chapter is illustrated with Zickefoose's stunning watercolor paintings and drawings. Not just individual tales about the trials and triumphs of raising birds, The Bluebird Effect mixes humor, natural history, and memoir to give readers an intimate story of a life lived among wild birds.

Gifts of the Crow: How Perception, Emotion, and Thought Allow Smart Birds to Behave Like Humans Author: John Marzluff ISBN-10: 143919873X ISBN-13: 9781439198735 Published: 2012-06-05 Publisher: Free Press
|
Book Description:
Stan Coren’s groundbreaking The Intelligence of Dogs meets Bernd Heinrich’s classic Mind of the Raven in this astonishing, beautifully illustrated look at the uncanny intelligence and emotions of crows.New research indicates that crows are among the brightest animals in the world. And professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington John Marzluff has done some of the most extraordinary research on crows, which has been featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, and the Chicago Tribune, as well as on NPR and PBS. Now he teams up with artist and fellow naturalist Tony Angell to offer an in-depth look at these incredible creatures—in a book that is brimming with surprises. Redefining the notion of “bird brain,” crows and ravens are often called feathered apes because of their clever tool-making and their ability to respond to environmental challenges, including those posed by humans. Indeed, their long lives, social habits, and large complex brains allow them to observe and learn from us and our social gatherings. Their marvelous brains allow crows to think, plan, and reconsider their actions. In these and other enthralling revelations, Marzluff and Angell portray creatures that are nothing short of amazing: they play, bestow gifts on people who help or feed them, use cars as nutcrackers, seek revenge on animals that harass them, are tricksters that lure birds to their deaths, and dream. The authors marvel at crows’ behavior that we humans would find strangely familiar, from delinquency and risk taking to passion and frolic. A testament to years of painstaking research, this fully illustrated, riveting work is a thrilling look at one of nature’s most wondrous creatures.

Bouncing from coast to coast on frenetic pilgrimages for once-in-a-lifetime rarities, they brave broiling deserts, bug-infested swamps, and some of the lumpiest motel mattresses known to man. This unprecedented year of beat-the-clock adventures ultimately leads one man to a record so gigantic that it is unlikely ever to be bested. Here, prizewinning journalist Mark Obmascik creates a dazzling, fun narrative of the 275,000-mile odyssey of these three obsessives as they fight to win the greatest— or maybe worst—birding contest of all time.

The Song of the Cardinal Author: Gene Stratton-Porter ISBN-10: 1611045274 ISBN-13: 9781611045277 Published: 2011-04-15 Publisher: ReadaClassic.com
|
Book Description:
“The Song of the Cardinal, Gene Stratton-Porter’s first book, serves as a delightful introduction to the more than twenty others that she ultimately published along with numerous stories and articles in magazines. Stratton-Porter is one of the best-selling authors ever and her novels have never gone out of print. The fictional Cardinal that the book is about is actually a superbird who is bigger and redder and sings louder and more beautifully than any other Cardinal in the world. Moreover, it sings with such clarity that the literal meaning of its songs can be interpreted by human beings, primarily an old farmer and his wife who own the farm on which this bird resides. The Song of the Cardinal seems to be aimed at adults although its tone and intellectual level is more like that of a child’s book. According to the film "Voice of Limberlost" it is based on a true experience in which the author finds a dead Cardinal “shot by some fiend with a gun simply to test his aim.” She picked up the bird and carried it home, formulating the story along the way. The book reveals the strength of her feelings toward nature and invokes religion as the main source of moral authority. The book is clearly intended to influence the behavior and attitudes of hunters and marksmen toward wild things, especially birds, and to invoke the fear of God into any reader who would willingly harm them. The strengths of this book are that nature is presented in an endearing way that might sensitize people on an emotional level to the need to preserve it. It calls attention to the moral dimensions of man’s impact on nature.
